    MER. Paper Kunsthalle
The MER. foundation was founded to examine the possibilities and position of the book medium as a place to exhibit art. The art book, since its beginnings, has traditionally been developed as a catalogue or an aide-mmoire, and seldom has been considered as a space to exhibit living art. However, artists from Dada to the appearance of the artists book have always thought of books as exhibiting spaces. MER. will be involved with providing this kind of activity through an institutional platform. MER. calls itself a Paper Kunsthalle, and plans to initiate, develop and support art exhibiting within the book medium.

    Argobooks
argobooks originated from more than ten years of collaborative work on catalogues and books with renowned international artists and institutions for contemporary art. Founded in 2007, argobooks arose from five years of managing the publishing department at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin as well as producing books for, among others, the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, the Henry Moore Institute, P.S.1 New York, different art associations and private collections. Hence resulted the emphasis on art books and thematic catalogues. In the German publishing landscape, argobooks bridges a gap between large publishing houses and one-man publishing operations.

    Motto
Motto was started by Alexis Zavialoff in 2007, and initiated as a distribution company for Switzerland, specializing in magazines and fanzines, a service which hardly existed before on the Swiss territory. The number of available publications kept growing and it now comprises more than 3000 titles, the catalogue being constantly updated. After establishing collaborations with major international distributors, the interest in books and smaller self-published items came naturally and it now constitutes a major part of Mottos focus. The Swiss territory remains a primary interest for Motto Distribution. Around twenty outlets display titles distributed by Motto: independent bookstores, chainstores, galleries, museums and concepts stores in Zurich, Bern, Lausanne, Geneva and Basel. Events are organized regularly, with a particular eye for art school environments and art spaces. Motto also collaborates with libraries. In December 2008 Motto opened its first permanent bookstore, in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The store is a natural progression from the traveling temporary bookshops that Motto has organized since 2007, first in Switzerland and then internationally. The locations include Vilnius, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Moscow, Vancouver, Stuttgart, Athens, Seoul, Tokyo, Paris. One of the main focuses of Motto is to offer the possibility of finding back issues of selected magazines, and also a wide selection of artists publications, including more experimental projects in sometimes very small print runs. The location, an old frame factory in a Kreuzberg courtyard, strongly influences the spirit of the project. The space, a single room of 90 m, is furnished in old dark wood. Shelfs and glass showcases allow a rotating display of selected publications. A long table and chairs in the middle of the space allow friendly browsing.Motto Berlin regularly functions as a space for book and magazine presentations, as well as special evenings dedicated to different discussions around publishing about art, graphic design, photography, typography and related matters.Motto Zrich is located in Perla-Mode, a place with many other ongoing projects such as Corner College andMessage Salon and formerly Nieves Books and Wartesaal. The publications displayed complete an intense programmme of exhibitions, screenings, talks and presentations.

    Paraguay Press
Paraguay is a co-operatively run, independent art publishing company, managed by the group of artists, writers and curators behind castillo/corrales and section 7 books. Paraguay Press was conceived by this group in order to reclaim control of the means of creation, production and distribution of the books in which their work appear and to create a framework for producing publications with a growing number of artists, writers, and institutions. Each project developed by Paraguay Press looks carefully into the pragmatics of publishing, and, according to the nature of each publication, adapts each print-run and scope, deploys different printing devices, and considers various distribution strategies. But all depart from an understanding of the space of the book, considered not as a medium of d ocumentation nor a vector of promotion, but as an act of translation and the extension of artistic, critical and curatorial thinking into a graphic, mobile, democratic and durable form.

    Fantom
FANTOM with an F, is a new international publication about the uses and abuses of photography. It is about the art of capturing timed effects of light. For practitioners and professionals by professional practitioners, FANTOM enframes its content in sectors: EYE TO EYE where photographers converse; SAMPLE SIZE with ready made discoveries by excellent eyes; BY APPOINTMENT ONLY offered by a collector or about a collection; EYE OF THE BEHOLDER, where gallerists celebrate the time based talents they expose and trade; and MEANS TO AN END surveying the unintentional surprises of purposeful image production, i.e. scientific, commercial, surveillance, documentary and the like. Herein the vernacular can take precedence over the artistic and visa versa depending on the value not of a discourse that comes after the image but allowing pictures to lead the discussions. A voyage into photography, FANTOM will orient readers and viewers in the scaled horizons drawn by photography and those who critique, exhibit, collect, occupy and emulate it. Found, forgotten and not yet discovered, first and foremost FANTOM features the voice of photographers, in interviews, portfolios, and statements alongside the often silent but rarely without a voice medium of Fotography.

    Alauda Publications
Alauda Publications is a new publishing house in the field of contemporary art, culture and theory. Our aim is to publish works of which form and content meaningfully interrelate. Close collaboration with artists, authors and art institutions is essential to us, both in case of commissioned works as well as initiatives proposed by others. A cross-disciplinary editorial approach allows for a wide range of themes. We offer a platform for publishing on subjects of contemporary and topical interest in the field of art and culture in the broadest sense. Further, we perceive a book as an alternative medium for artists, both as a visual object and as way of documenting the artistic process. The emphasis is on carefully designed publications, with an eye for tactility, craftsmanship and ecology. The variety of publications ranges from simple brochures to comprehensive volumes, from monographs and catalogues to special signed editions. We work without a fixed procedure or a pre-specified format: for every book a tailor-made plan is created, encompassing all steps from the initial idea to the distribution. Alauda Publications is an Amsterdam-based internationally operating publishing house, founded in 2009.

    Boekie Woekie
Boekie Woekie, books by artists, began paying rent for a tiny space in downtown Amsterdam on January 1st, 1986. It was then seen by its 6 founders (artists from 3 countries living in Amsterdam) as a shop for their own publications. After the first 5 years and some reshuffling of the group and with 3 of the founders left, Boekie Woekie began its second phase in a quite much bigger shop space around the corner and with a renewed concept resulting from the gained experience: the new shop opened for publications by others. There are now about 7000 titles – almost exclusively self published or small press books. Those who run it Henritte van Egten (Dutch), Rna Thorkelsdttir (Icelandic) and Jan Voss (German) have continued their personal artists careers and since years count the shop itself as a sculpture in progress they work on concertedly. A small gallery space has belonged to Boekie Woekie from the beginning. There never came a stop to very small scale publishing (3 or 4 titles a year) which has lead to the yearly participation in one or two book fairs (Frankfurt, London, New York). The entirely self financing enterprise is Europes, if not the worlds, venue for artists books the longest in existence which carries books regardless to their author’s fame.

    Capricious
Swedish photographer Sophie Mrner founded Capricious Magazine while she was living in Amsterdam in 2004. It is a biannual publication dedicated to showcasing emerging fine art photography. Its contributors and subject matter span the globe and it can be purchased from quality booksellers internationally. The magazine is comprised almost entirely of images; it has very little text and the pages are perforated to encourage the pinning up of its contents. Since Capricious collaborates with guest editors and chooses a new theme for each edition, the material is never lackluster. And while constant change is a primary Capricious trait, there are also definite common visual threads running throughout its 5-year history. Capricious has an affinity for things like animals, androgyny, opposition, reclaimed life, lust, natural as well as urban life, intimacy, revolution and nostalgia. Hanna Liden, Ryan McGinley, Esther Teichmann, Nick Haymes, Olaf Breuning, Melanie Bonajo and Skye Parrott are just a few of the dozens of photographers whose work has been promoted by presence in Capricious. As a leading fine art photography journal, Capricious Magazine occupies a rare and whimsical space between commercial and fashion photography; it operates as both a tool for discovering new talent and as an artists oasis.

    Torpedo
Torpedo is a non-profit (project-based) organization devoted to the promotion and production of artists books, art theory and critical readers in contemporary art. Situated in Trelastgata, Oslo, Torpedo is both a publisher and a bookstore, and occasionally a venue for exhibitions and concerts related to book launches and the process of publishing, or discursive activities like panel discussions and debates.Founded in 2005 by Elin Maria Olaussen, Karen Christine Tandberg, Eivind Slettemes, Pia Sndergaard and Anna Carin Hedberg, Torpedo came about after the execution of the former bookstore at the Museum of Contemporary art in 2004, a result of the political merging of five major museums and institutions into the National Museum of art, Design and architecture. With the continued trend of shutting down independent bookstores for the benefit and domination of bigger and fewer traders, Torpedo is emphasizing the interest in strengthening the field of production and distribution of artists` books and small publishers publications in Norway. This also reflects our work internationally on distribution, presentation and collaborations with artists, critics, writers, institutions and curators.

The MORAVA Publishing House was established in early 2010 in Pozna, Poland. We wish to develop our publishing projects in two directions: original ideas for books and limited editions of works. All projects will take utmost advantage of the noble material of paper. We are interested in publications which are difficult to classify; while their contents stir the readers imagination, their form offers the pleasure of a hands-on experience of something unique. We encourage contacts from authors who may come from different parts of the world yet share an unbridled curiosity of the surrounding world. This plus the meticulous and reliable execution of each and every publication is the priority for the MORAVA Publishing House. We welcome suggestions of publications. Send us an email with short descriptions of ideas and portfolios in pdf format with links to websites.

    Pierre von Kleist
Pierre von Kleist Editions is an artist run publisher specialized in photo books. We are committed to the production of new, innovative photo books and we believe the photo book to be a medium capable of expressing complex, abstract, contemporary issues and to reach a wide audience. We believe that in a multicultural, globalized world the photo book is one of the privileged mediums. The language of sequential images is, perhaps, todays most international language, understood by the large majority of the world population. Photo books dont need translation, they need world distribution. Internet provides an efficient, accessible way for books to reach global audiences. At PVKe we aim to produce books that transcend the documentary quality that is usually associated with the photography medium. We are interested in artistic achievements and in the specific qualities that the medium offers. We want to make books that tell stories and deal with the contemporary way of living. The photo book is a complex art form that combines photography, graphic design, cinema, literature, etc. Our goal is to push the limits and conventions of the photo book, contributing to establish it as a respected, mature medium.Besides being a II World War hero, Pierre von Kleist was both a prolific author and an eclectic collector of photo books. His photo book collection was probably the biggest in Europe at the time it was destroyed by a fire in the early 50s. A respected scholar, his texts about the photo book are still some of the most important works on the subject. We’re based in Lisbon, Portugal.

    BAS
is an artist -run space initiated in 2006 by Banu Cennetolu which collects and produces artists books and printed matters. In a country where the art world is quiet limited in terms of infrastructure, book art could be an efficient way to disseminate work and words. Books and printed matters are efficient means to question.A book can create a discussion because it demands the readers participation. It is not a detached or a distant participation; it is a direct one involving the readers body and mind. The maker of the book creates a fixed content, than the reader manipulates this very space mentally and physically.BAS, while willing to create awareness with its growing international artists’ books collection aims as well to generate a new platform for Turkish artists to explore printed matter as an alternative space. The first project Bent, made in collaboration with Philippine Hoegen, will be to produce a series of artists books from Turkey.

    Waterfall Magazine
Waterfall was founded in 2006, initially to facilitate the international exchange of contemporary art and culture. Serving as a platform for art, each issue of Waterfall is published online with artists submissions and cooperation according to the theme of each issue. The categories include photography, illustration, design, essays and novels. Behind the press relationships between Waterfall and the artists, are founded in letters exchanged back and forth or light conversation; to search and uncover the genuineness of artistic creation in real life. Aside, Waterfall shares random process in several different columns by turn, discussing a music type, a scenery, a cafe, a writer, or simply a song from time to time. The magazine aims to release an issue per season. Making most of the internet, Waterfall is only to be read online instead of using PDF files. The advantage is allowing comments and the exchange of opinions from all readers, as well as extending its domain by linking relevant webpages. Waterfall sustains attention to art movements both at home and abroad. In addition to the main magazine, information regarding exhibitions, activities and seminars can also be found on the website.Since the beginning of February 2007, Waterfall has extended from the press to actual exhibitions. Cooperating with NanHai Gallery, and collocating with the current issue SOUNDS OFF, the show involved both still works and performance by artists including Zeng Yu Qin and Yao Zhong Han. This action has opened up different frames of references to the online-based magazine, enacting different possibilities of interactions between readers of contemporary art. From 2009, Waterfall has been seeking different forms to present contemporary visual creation. Seeing Taiwanese publishing circles lack of attention towards contemporary art and photography, also bearing deep affections brought on by actual printed leaves as carrier of knowledge; the next goal of Waterfall is the materialization of the online magazine, to be published twice a year. Besides the participation of Taiwanese artists by invitation, Waterfall embraces a selection of artworks from all over the world; introducing Art Photography and *New Photography to broaden the horizon of domestic art lovers. In near future, exhibitions are expected to be held again for readers to experience and appreciate the works in person. There will also be cooperative programs for young Taiwanese and overseas artists, to encourage and spark more unique art creations under the backdrop of various cultures and lives.

    Eastside Projects
Eastside Projects is an artist-run space, a public gallery for the City of Birmingham and the World. It is organised by a founding collective comprising Simon & Tom Bloor, Celine Condorelli, Ruth Claxton, James Langdon and Gavin Wade, who first conceived and now runs the space.Eastside Projects is a new model for a gallery, one where space and programme are intertwined: a complex evolving programme of works and events starting from radical historical positions. We aim to commission and present experimental contemporary art practices and exhibitions. The artist is invited to set the existing conditions for the gallery. Work may remain. Work may be responded to. The gallery is a collection. The gallery is an artwork. The artist-run space is a public good.We aim to support the cultural growth of the City.

    AND Publishing
What we doAND is a new platform exploring print on demand technologies AND publishing conceptually driven artists’ books. We develop, print AND display artists publications using quick AND cost effective print processes that allow for experimentation AND short runs. We present works AND research by other artists AND colleagues on our online bookshelf AND offer a DIY space for artists to directly publish AND display their own material.Photocopied or glossy printed, we define print on demand as a method, a tool to directly AND immediately interact AND communicate an idea to an audience. Due to short print runs (starting from one copy), low productions costs AND almost no storage costs we can develop AND sustain an adventurous, inquiring, creative practice without having to compromise AND conform the conventions of a mass market. 1Our approachshowing what the conjunction AND is, neither a union, nor a juxtaposition, but the birth of a stammering … AND… AND… AND…’ 2AND is driven by research AND collaborative engagement. We are based at an art school and it is the uniqueness of this creative laboratory, which provides artistic freedom and head space for experimentation. AND has established its own print on demand workshop at Byam Shaw School of Art as a flexible and reactive site for multiple roles AND functions within the art college.Distribution & SalesOur office is small AND mobile, a bespoke bookshelf contains the shop AND can be seen popping up in locations to explore modes of distribution. Our footprint mirrors our technology in that we only print as many copies as necessary AND we only use as much space as necessary. These decisions are dictated by context, desire, place, time AND funds. On our online platform we commission, publish, exhibit AND distribute artists books several times a year based on Calls to Action. We offer a self-publishing facility (DIY), which allows artists to publish AND display their own works.Who we areAND is directed by Lynn Harris & Eva Weinmayr.

    Nobody books
Stephen Gill founded his imprint Nobody in 2005 in order to exercise maximum control over the publication process of his books. His intention was to make books at one with their content rather than just a shell to house photographs. Experimentation with materials, and a hands-on, tactile approach to maquette making led, in many cases, to his books having an individual, unique presence. This could come in the form of spray paint, or a rubber stamp, sometimes entire books are manufactured and assembled by hand in his Hackney studio

    Otto Books
My aim is to make beautiful, lavishly illustrated picture books.Whereas many books look nice on the cover, inside they are often visually unexciting. Mainstream publishing is market-focused and concerned with pleasing the largest possible audience. Most books end up visually boring and sterile.By contrast, I’d like to think that in my books every page is a cover. There are no ‘dead’ areas, I try to fill the book inch by inch with the most modern, exciting and challenging graphics. My books are fresh and lively, but also engaging and critical: there are no compromises. I am driven by a passion for the printed image on paper, and I take a pride in what I do.My books are illustration based, text plays a supportive role. Most are screen printed in small editions. Quality of print and paper is paramount. I don’t put too much into the binding as I try to keep the costs and prices low. The visual narratives deal with mythologies in contemporary culture, such as consumerism, work-ethic, self-destruction. I also have 20 years of experience in editorial illustraton to draw on, working for international magazines and newspapers. For me there is no distinction as to whether the books are for children or adults.

    Printed Matter, Inc
Printed Matter is the world’’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of publications made by artists. Founded as a for-profit alternative arts space in 1976 by artists and artworkers, Printed Matter reincorporated in 1978 to become the independent non-profit organization that it is today. Originally situated in Tribeca, Printed Matter moved to SoHo in 1989 where for twelve years the book displays and artists projects in the large storefront windows contributed to the artistic and intellectual vibrancy of the neighborhood. In 2001 Printed Matter relocated to Chelsea, where it continued to foreground the book as an alternative venue – or artistic medium – for artists projects and ideas. Finally, in December of 2005 Printed Matter moved into our current storefront location in Chelsea with big windows and greatly increased display and exhibition space. Recognized for years as an essential voice in the increasingly diversified art world conversations and debates, Printed Matter is dedicated to the examination and interrogation of the changing role of artists publications in the landscape of contemporary art.Printed Matter’’s mission is to foster the appreciation, dissemination, and understanding of artists’ publications, which we define as books or other editioned publications conceived by artists as art works, or, more succinctly, as “artwork for the page.” Printed Matter specializes in publications produced in large, inexpensive editions and therefore does not deal in “book arts” or “book objects” which are often produced in smaller, more expensive editions due to the craft and labor involved in their fabrication. To promote public awareness of and access to artists books, Printed Matter maintains a public reading room where over 15,000 titles by 5,000 international artists are available for viewing and purchase. In addition to being a wholesale and retail distribution hub for artists books, Printed Matter offers a free consulting service to libraries, art institutions, and art professionals involved with artists books throughout the world. Printed Matter presents a range of educational programs for the public from talks to student groups by staff members to in-store lectures and readings by artists, critics, and curators. These educational initiatives are complemented by our internationally recognized exhibitions program and publishing program.

    Seems
Seems is an independent publisher of small-run art books based in New York. Our goal is to make original art accessible to everyone. We create books that start dialog and conversation, with a high priority placed on quality and content. We publish a hybrid of zines and monographs, with each book in a solo show format: one artist with a free reign throughout. The name Seems comes from the idea that art and design are not black and white, but gray; there is no absolute; therefore they demand dialog and debate. Seems has also participated in book exhibitions in South Africa, Italy, Canada, San Francisco, and New York.
