The themes and motifs in art can range from the lofty plane of Madonnas and landscapes to swimmers on the beach or picnics in the park. Gober belongs to those, like Marcel Duchamp, who could be called artistes sanitaires. The numerous sketches and installations of sinks in this catalog of a traveling exhibition created by the Walker Art Center offer a new way of looking at these commonplace objects. The poetry of Whitman is an integral part of the text, pointing up the possibilities of discovering the self in ordinary life. In a section showing slides of a changing painting, the viewer is offered an opportunity to see the artist’s imagination at work: the same surface is painted upon, cleaned, and painted upon once again. The works are filled with wit and whimsy, charming bits familiar to us allAbut one wonders how long the charm will last.
