Richard Prince. Girlfriends

This series, “Girlfriends,” like “Cowboys” and other work, features images appropriated from mass media, in this case biker magazines. Women photographed by their boyfriends on the men’s motorcycles, clothed in skin-tight denim or leather or partially naked, have become rich fodder in Prince’s exploration of American consumer culture. By taking these images out of context and putting them in a gallery setting, Prince asks the viewer to look at the broader meanings that can be interpreted beyond their originally intended ones.
