Dogs and Boats and Airplanes told in the form of Ivan the Terrible

This bemused visual poem is an atmospheric re-imaginging of Sergei Eisenstein’s film “Ivan the Terrible Part I” as a series of black and white photographs featuring a cast of only dogs, boats and airplanes. The images, all taken between 2002 and 2011 on Burns’s trips through Europe and the Americas, are organized by headings derived from the narrative sequence of the film. This book plays within the dramatic severity of its original source to present a sharply witty and often unexpectedly majestic view of these contemporary preoccupations. “I have endeavored, as much as possible, to remain true to Eisenstein’s original work with the exception of replacing the film’s movement, players and story with pictures of dogs and boats and airplanes.” – the author
