Thesiger twice negotiated the Empty Quarter while living among the Bedu, and spent several years from 1950 to 1958 with the Marsh Arabs of southern Iraq, travelling at intervals in Kurdistan, Morocco and the Karakoram and Hindu Kush ranges of western Asia.
