Polar Crossing

This exhibition catalogue cum artist’s book was published on the occasion of the 1978 show organized by Chris Burden at the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art. Burden’s introductory text explains, “I was repeatedly asked why American artists were always asked to visit Europe but that European artists were almost never asked to visit the United States. The usual answer is that American artists are so much better and more interesting than their European counterparts that bringing European artists to the United States would be of no interest. After having met several European artists whose work I felt was interesting and contemporary, I decided to organize an exhibition of three artists.” The resulting book collects documentation and instructions of performances from the three artists he selected.
