Isabella Rozendaal. Animalia Amsterdam: Pet Portraits

In 2007 Isabella Rozendaal published On Loving Animals, a photobook about the pets of the Netherlands that documents the loving, outrageous, and complex relationship between humans and animals. The cognitive dissonance between our love for animals and our shameless exploitation of them has been a prominent theme in her work ever since. A decade later, Rozendaal was commissioned by the Amsterdam City Archive to spend a year photographing domesticated animals in almost every neighbourhood in the city. Apparently the animals of Amsterdam have remained largely invisible in the citys recorded history, something which Rozendaal hopes to change.
