Spanish artist Maider Lopez is becoming an international star with her unusual projects involving droves of community volunteers in captivating public interventions. Polder Cup combines the Dutch love of soccer with the characteristic feature of the Dutch landscape, the polder – a reclaimed marsh protected from flooding by dikes. Lopez painted soccer fields right across the polders, ditches and dikes, forcing players to negotiate endless new rules and tactics to keep the matches going. These unique games brought together everyone from soccer players to art lovers, all of whom were at the mercy of the unprecedented setting. This extensively illustrated book captures the joyous, improvisatory spirit of the tournament in brilliant color photographs, and ends with two-page presentations of seven previous interventions by Lopez.
