Published in conjunction with an exhibition of Max Ernst’s work in Turin, this book includes almost 150 reproductions of his sculptures and collages, from the 1930s on.
Julien Levy (1906-1981) was one of the most influential art dealers of the twentieth century. The Julien Levy Gallery, which opened in New York in 1931 and closed in 1949, played an essential role in the shift of the cultural avant-garde from Paris to New York. It was the first American gallery to sponsor a show on Surrealism and to champion Neoromanticism, Magic Realism, and Machine Abstraction. Luis Buñuel’s film Un Chien Andalou and Joseph Cornell’s Rose Hobart were first screened in the gallery. Among the artists Levy exhibited were Eugene Atget, Constantin Brancusi, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Joseph Cornell, Salvador Dali, Walt Disney, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Walker Evans, Leonor Fini, Naum Gabo, Alberto Giacometti, Arshile Gorky, Frida Kahlo, Fernand Léger, René Magritte, Lee Miller, Man Ray, Ben Shahn, and Dorothea Tanning. Levy also initiated the cocktail opening.This book, which accompanies a retrospective exhibition on the Julien Levy Gallery in New York, includes reproductions of paintings, photographs, and film stills from museum and private collections, as well as of art and ephemera from Levy’s own collection. The book offers recollections of Levy and his gallery from several angles. Dorothea Tanning reminisces about her lifelong friendship with her first dealer. Ingrid Schaffner surveys the evolution of Levy’s enterprise from combination curiosity shop, exhibition space, and performance site into a model for the contemporary art gallery. Steven Watson discusses Levy’s personal and professional affiliations with the “Harvard Moderns”–Alfred Barr, Jr., and A. Everett Austin among them. Carolyn Burke looks at Levy’s complex relationship with his mother-in-law, poet and painter Mina Loy, who acted as his agent and mentor in Paris. Because of censorship laws, Edition 69 series was never for sale, nor was it made available to libraries. The books were exclusively for subscribers, collectors, and a circle of friends, the Czech avant-garde investigating the taboos of bourgeois culture. This volume includes the two most important texts in the series: * Nezval’s Sexual Nocturne * Styrsky’s Emilie Come to Me in a Dream * an original essay from psychoanalyst Bohuslav Brouk, a founding member of the Czechslovak Surrealist Group and much influenced by Max Ernst.
Photomontage was pioneered as a technique in central Europe in the 1910s, where it flourished as an art form through the end of World War II. While German artists such as John Heartfield, Max Ernst and Hannah Höch used the medium to respond to the atrocities of war, other areas of Europe were simultaneously experiencing a newfound political autonomy as the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed. For these artists, namely Polish and Czech, photomontage manifested itself in a Surrealist approach to cut-and-paste imagery that emphasized its potential for visual poetry. Photo/Montage in Print traces the explosion of photomontage art in book cover design and illustrated magazines in the interwar period. Post Scriptum is the largest monograph to date on one of Sweden’s most beloved photographers. Founder of the legendary photography school Fotoskolan in Stockholm in 1962, and an inspiration to two generations of photographers, Christer Strömholm (1918–2002) was one of the first Swedish photographers to attain international prominence. Living in both Sweden and France, he first won acclaim with his photo book Poste Restante, which he followed up with Vännerna från Place Blanche (The Friends from Place Blanche)–portrayals of transsexuals in 1960s Paris. His images from his travels in Japan, Spain and the United States are also widely admired. This volume includes these and numerous other bodies of work, including his portraits of artists such as Duchamp, Breton, Ernst, Giacometti, Klein, Rauschenberg, Spoerri and others, compiling nearly 270 of Strömholm’s best photographs.
