Composers and artists have always borrowed from each other. Peter Vergo, for the first time, offers an in-depth study of how and why, in the modernist era, music and painting became intertwined. Artist-composer relationships examined include Debussy’s interest in Whistler, Tuner, and Monet, Franz Liszt’s fascination with Raphael and Michelangelo, Kandinsky with Schoenberg and Paul Klee’s influence from Polyphonic music. How artists attempted to translate musical rhythms, and structures into painting and how musicians developed visual themes, all within the backdrop to modernism, as time of huge change in freedoms, industry, expression, ideological frameworks, and artistic practice.

Taking its title from Deleuze, this exhibition and catalogue consider the body linguistically. In what sense do bodies produce language, how are they themselves grasped and defined by it, and what spaces for action are opened up by this understanding? Come the 1990s, the great Michelangelo Antonioni’s directing career was widely considered to have been finally curtailed by the effects of a stroke which left him scarcely able to speak. But with the support of committed financiers and fellow professionals, Antonioni was able to undertake Beyond the Clouds, a portmanteau piece adapted from several of his short stories and sketches. A stellar cast (John Malkovich, Sophie Marceau, Peter Weller, Irene Jacob, Jean Reno, Fanny Ardant) was assembled. Wim Wenders, a passionate admirer of Antonioni, agreed to back-stop the production: to direct some linking sequences and to assist Antonioni on the shoot. This book is his journal of that process, in which Wenders writes thoughtfully and frankly about the pleasures and problems to be had in collaborating with such a renowned maestro under such extraordinary conditions.

The wonderfully imaginative starting point for Over the Edges is the corners of city buildings. Corners are a city’s structural accents, reference points in the orientation of the city; a place to meet, and a place to literally bump into someone. Experimenting with this concept, Jan Hoet and Giacinto Di Pietrantonio gave over 55 artists access to the corners and edges of buildings in the old town center of Ghent. The result is an extremely varied group of works and installations. Art and Film Since 1945: Hall of Mirrors explores the complex and profound relationship between cinema and the visual arts in the postwar era. It examines how art has shifted toward film, how film has been influenced by art, and how the two have fused into new forms of artistic expression.
Published in conjunction with a major exhibition organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Art and Film features work by more than one hundred of the century’s most remarkable filmmakers and artists, such as Joseph Cornell, Alfred Hitchcock, Akira Kurosawa, Jean-Luc Godard, Michelangelo Antonioni, Richard Hamilton, Diane Arbus, Andy Warhol, Raul Ruiz, John Baldessari, Cindy Sherman, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Stan Douglas.
The book’s seven essays range widely over themes including Hollywood glamour and stardom, the experimental cinema of the sixties, the influence of psychoanalytic and feminist film theory on art, nostalgia for cinema’s golden age, and presentiments of its fragmentation and death. The dialogue between art and film returns frequently to cinema’s origins, splintering and re-arranging into new, self-reflexive experiences that highlight and subvert film practice.

Originally published in 1972 by the Nigel Greenwood Gallery, Book as Artwork 1960/1972 was the first catalogue devoted to the then new medium of the artist’s book and it remains a canonical reference (though one that, due to its scarcity, is not as well known as it should be). This publication started as an article and a list of about 80 artists’ books which appeared in 1970 in the first issue of the Italian magazine Arte. Not long after it was translated and published in Interfunktionen. Then in 1972 the Nigel Greenwood Gallery in London mounted an exhibition of artists’ books and issued a catalogue with an updated text by Celant and a greatly expanded bibliography (now nearly 300 titles) jointly compiled by Celant and Lynda Morris. The exhibition was the first of its kind and the catalogue a genuinely historic publication. Grounded in the media studies of Marshall McLuhan and philosophical writings of Herbert Marcuse, Celant’s analysis of the medium has the feeling of a definitive statement. He lays out exactly what makes the medium important while noting the historical trends and key individuals that led to its rapid development after 1960. Significantly, the history Celant wrote in 1972 is much broader than the overly simplistic Dieter-Rot-in-Europe-and-Ruscha-in-America origin myth of the artist’s book that has gained currency since. Besides Ruscha and Rot, Celant’s text emphasizes the early influence of John Cage but he also encompasses into the narrative such disparate or overlooked elements as the Zaj group in Spain and Arte Povera in Italy, as well as work related to Fluxus, Art & Language, Land Art, Pop, Minimalism, Conceptualism, etc. The bibliography includes books that range from the iconic to the virtually unknown by Vito Acconci, Carl Andre, Alison Knowles, Richard Hamilton, Piero Manzoni, Joseph Kosuth, John Latham, Andy Warhol, Bob Law, Yoko Ono, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Henry Flynt, Hanne Darboven, Dan Graham, Dick Higgins, Joel Fisher, Athena Tacha, John Stezaker, Gianfranco Baruchello, Jose Luis Castillejo, Sol Lewitt, Robert Morris, Stanley Brouwn, Edouardo Paolozzi, Bruce Nauman and Bruce McLean, to name just a few of the artists whose work is cited. With this new edition it is possible to regain the perspective of 1972. It was a period when, as Celant describes it, the “the rules used for the identification of the art object were destroyed” and thus “medium became significant in itself.” Artists’ books were emblematic of the new multidisciplinary approach taken by the era’s avant-garde and, as that approach continues to be the predominant mode among artists working today, it is increasingly clear that artists’ books have been, and continue to be, integral to the practice of art in the contemporary era.

Catalogue d’une exposition étendue sur 17 000 m2, riche d’une centaine d’artistes de tous pays et de quelque quatre cents oeuvres, Partage d’exotisme, titre de la cinquième Biennale d’Art contemporain de Lyon, ne pouvait pas manquer de se présenter en deux volumes et dans une édition bilingue (français/anglais). Le premier rassemble un recueil de textes autour de la notion d’exotisme, du sens de l’art, de la modernité. Autant d’articles, conçus comme une introduction aux déambulations à venir, signés par des anthropologues, des ethnologues, directeurs de musées et universitaires à l’origine de cette prodigieuse exposition. Le second volume en est l’illustration en images. Si l’intitulé de partage d’exotisme revêt des allures de provocation, les oeuvres sont imprégnées d’un humour constant, celles des collectifs aborigènes réalisés in situ, comme celles des plasticiens contemporains, d’Antoni Tàpies à Jackie Kayser. This catalogue accompanies ARTISTS’ BOOK NOT ARTISTS’ BOOK, an exhibition of about one hundred books (all of them classifiable as artists’ books, or not) which includes publications by Chris Burden, Ira Cohen, Richard Meltzer, John Baldessari, Seth Price, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Richard Hell, Tina Lhotsky, Sue Williams, Tom Sachs, Richard Prince, William Gibson, David Wojnarowicz, Dara Birnbaum, Jim Shaw, Ed Ruscha, Sean Landers, and many others (not to mention, Various, Anonymous, and Unknown). The show is jointly curated by Johan Kugelberg and Jeremy Sanders and to the catalogue is formatted in the style of an old “Ace double” pulp novel–there is a variation of the cover design on both front and back (front and front?) and the two curators’ alternative viewpoints on artists’ books within. What did the arrival of cinema do for photography? How did the moving image change our relation to the still image? Why have cinema and photography been so drawn to each other? Close-ups, freeze frames and the countless portrayals of photographers on screen are signs of cinema’s enduring attraction to the still image. Photo-stories, sequences and staged tableaux speak of the deep influence of cinema on photography. Photography and Cinema a considers the importance of the still image for filmmakers such as the Lumière brothers, Alfred Hitchcock, Michelangelo Antonioni, Jean-Luc Godard, Chris Marker, Mark Lewis, Agnès Varda, Peter Weir, Christopher Nolan and many others. In parallel it looks at the cinematic in the work of photographers and artists that include Germaine Krull, William Klein, John Baldessari, Jeff Wall, Victor Burgin and Cindy Sherman. From film stills and flipbooks to slide shows and digital imaging, hybrid visual forms have established an ambiguous realm between motion and stillness. David Campany assembles a missing history in which photography and cinema have been each other’s muse and inspiration for over a century.

Robert Morris, a leading figure in postwar American art, is best known as a pioneer of minimalist sculpture, process art, and earthworks. Yet Morris has resisted affiliation with any one movement or style. An extraordinarily versatile artist, he has produced dances, performance pieces, prints, paintings, drawings, and installations, working with materials including plywood, felt, dirt, aluminum, steel mesh, fiberglass, and encaustic. Throughout his career, Morris has written influential critical essays, commenting on his own work as well as that of other artists, and exploring through text many of the theoretical concerns addressed in his artwork—about perception, materiality, space, and the process of artmaking. Have I Reasons presents seventeen of Morris’s essays, six of which have never been published before. Written over the past fifteen years, the essays, along with the volume’s many illustrations, provide an invaluable record of the recent thought of a major American artist. The writings are arranged chronologically, beginning with “Indiana Street,” a vivid autobiographical account of the artist’s early years in Kansas City, Missouri. Have I Reasons includes reflections on Morris’s own site-specific installations; transcripts of seminars he conducted in conjunction with exhibitions; and the textual element of The Birthday Boy, the two-screen video-and-sound piece he installed at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, Italy, on the occasion of the five hundredth anniversary of Michelangelo’s David. Essays range from original interpretations of Cézanne’s Mont Sainte-Victoire paintings and Jasper Johns’ early work to engagements with one of Morris’s most significant interlocutors, the philosopher Donald Davidson. Have I Reasons conveys not only Morris’s enduring deep interest in philosophy and issues of resemblance and representation but also his more recent turn toward directly addressing contemporary social and political issues such as corporate excess and preemptive belligerence.
