This book examines the innovative work of thirty-four-year-old Scottish artist Douglas Gordon. Gordon is perhaps best known for installations that feature classic films by directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, and Martin Scorsese. In each of these works the original film has been manipulatedóslowed down, mirrored by the use of split screen or dual projection, or had its soundtrack alteredóto emphasize the artist’s own signature themes, which include trust, guilt, madness, confession, deception, and doubling.
Produced in conjunction with a survey of Gordon’s work at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the book features essays by MOCA assistant curator Michael Darling, exhibition curator Russell Ferguson, Scottish novelist Francis McKee, and Guggenheim Museum curator Nancy Spector. Darlingís essay places Gordon’s work in the context of the Romantic tradition. Ferguson’s essay looks at Gordon’s work to date. It focuses on the issue of trust as it weaves its way from early works such as the performance/installation Trust Me, through his tattoo and instruction works, to more recent works such as Feature Film, which incorporates the Hitchcock film Vertigo. McKee compiles Gordonís literary sources into a kind of hybridized text. Spector’s essay focuses on the autobiographical nature of Gordon’s oeuvre, showing how he shifts between revealing details of his personal lifeófor example, the ongoing List of Names lists all the people he has met in a given period of timeó-and obscuring other aspects of his identity. Designed by the studio of Bruce Mau in close collaboration with Gordon himself, this book promises to be the definitive reference on one of today’s most exciting young artists.
Famed for his 24-Hour Psycho, Scottish-born, New York-based artist Douglas Gordon (born 1966) is one of the most influential video and film artists of his generation. Produced in close collaboration with the artist, this catalogue looks at his latest works in the context of his earlier oeuvre.
Douglas Gordon has proven himself a master of adaptation, bending the works of other artists through his own refractive lens. One of the most decorated artists of his time, he has stretched Hitchcock’s Psycho from two hours to twenty-four, he has set Taxi Driver‘s unsettling “You talking to me?” scene into a two-screen projection, and now, he’s taken his obsession with a novel by Scottish writer James Hogg (1770-1835) to new lengths. Gordon’s Confessions is an immersive environment based on The Memoirs and Private Confessions of a Justified Sinner, a narrative of shifting perspectives that traces a strict Calvinist young man’s descent into a series of murders. Gordon’s ingenious and disturbing work used the three levels of the Kunsthaus Bregenz, where it first appeared, to explore different sensory experiences of the story, from a printing room that produces the story’s pages on an industrial-age offset press to a black-light-shrouded space where the viewer only hears the story to an installation of large-format and silent film projections on the front and back of a diaphanous screen.
This catalogue, designed by Bruce Mau, echoes the format of the exhibition with three slipcased volumes that give the reader an experience comparable to that of the show.
Double Vision presents two of the most talked about video artists on the contemporary scene: Stan Douglas and Douglas Gordon. Canadian artist Stan Douglas’s new double-screen video work, Win, Place, or Show, takes as its point of departure the fundamental transformation of civic space in North America during the postwar era of “urban renewal.” Douglas’ inquiry intersects with Scottish artist Douglas Gordon’s double-screen video installation left is right and right is wrong and left is wrong and right is right, inspired by Whirlpool, a little-known 1949 film by Otto Preminger. Psychic disorder is a subject of central importance in Gordon’s art. This book explores the tangential points of interest within these two installation projects, shown together in the exhibition “Double Vision” at Dia Center for the Arts.
A companion guide to the retrospective now on view at Los Angeles’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), this catalog is intended as the first comprehensive monograph on Gordon. Exhibition curator Ferguson (In Memory of My Feelings) opens with an essay that requires some prior knowledge of Gordon’s themes. His interpretive journey can be dizzying and labyrinthine and often leads to lengthy, initially inexplicable sojourns into literary analysis. Essays by MOCA assistant curator Michael Darling and Guggenheim curator Nancy Spector provide a more solid rationale for their interpretations, while Scottish writer Francis McKee (Luminous) stitches together a Frankenstein-like fabric of textual snippets by other writers that tell the tale of a good man who struggles against his inherently evil side and loses. The late critic David Sylvester closes with an interview of Gordon that reveals the motives behind his use of the film medium. The catalog’s graphics, which include white text that seemingly hovers over dark-toned film stills, is a visual manifestation of Gordon’s conceptual preoccupation: dualism and battling opposites. A valuable, comprehensive bibliography follows the essays.
This publication is the first to present a major survey of the works and ideas of Scottish artist Douglas Gordon (1966). Since 1990 Gordon has made incisive and compelling works on the subjects of memory, perception and interpretation. Using film, video, sound and the written word, his work have been presented in galleries and museums collections worldwide. In 1996 Gordon was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize in London, in 1997 the Premio 2000 at the Venice Biennale and in 1998 the Hugo Boss Prize in New York. The main text in a conversation between the artist and Jan Debbaut, director of Eindhoven’s Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum. The conversation covers a two-year period during which they discuss aspects of Gordon’s work, his background, training, attitudes to art and artists, his references and preoccupations. The conservations are annotations by Francis McKee, cultural historian and Director of Programme, Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glascow.
From his early brief dramas for television depicting uncanny David Lynch-like encounters, to his spectacular split-screen film installation Der Sandmann, Stan Douglas’ (b.1960) work is layered with the artist’s observations on social and racial alienation and psychological states. The artist is a master at selecting images that evoke entire social and political moments. Examples include a reconstructed 1960s Paris TV broadcast of free-jazz that suggests the May 1968 generation and its connections with African-American musical freedom; and landscape studies of Nootka Sound in Canada that stir memories of the European conquests of Native Americans. Featured in such major exhibitions as Documenta and the Venice Biennale and nominated for the Hugo Boss/Guggenheim prize in 1997, Douglas has emerged as an international figure. This is the first major publication on his work. Canadian curator and writer Scott Watson surveys the artist’s work in relation to late twentieth-century aesthetics, politics and psychoanalysis, while American artist Diana Thater conducts an in-depth interview on the sources behind Douglas’s work. Carol J. Clover, an expert on film and Nordic mythology, focusses on the fusion in film, psychoanalysis and fable in Der Sandman. The Artist’s Choice text is by French philosopher Gilles Deleuze from his 1967 essay ‘Humour, Irony and the Law’, which reflects on the issues of power and powerlessness also central to Douglas’s art. The histories and ideas behind the artist’s works are explained through project descriptions, notes and scripts in the Artist’s Writings section, alongside an essay on the teleplays of Samuel Becket and an interview with curator and critic Lynne Cooke.
An important exhibition catalogue as well as reference work on artists’ books. This catalogue was designed by the book artist Buzz Spector (b. 1948), and his pencil notes for the mock-up have been reproduced in this final version. Jeffrey Abt, the organizer of the exhibition, writes in an insightful essay: “The contemporary artist’s book…represents an evolution of the book’s use from a vehicle for text and its illustration to an artistically integrated, sometimes sculptural object. By the 1990s, public art had evolved far beyond the lonely monument on an open plaza. Now public artists might design the entire plaza, create an event to alter the social dynamics of an urban environment, or help to reconstruct a neighborhood. “L.A. Rising: SoCal Artists Before 1980” is the first comprehensive pictorial showcase of the diverse universe of artists working in the Los Angeles area during the formative period of Los Angeles’ art history. Over 800 color and 100 black and white images of work by almost 500 artists illustrate the edited texts quoted from critical reviews of exhibitions and writings of the period. Special efforts have been made to include both recognized and heretofore unsung key players in the Los Angeles art world. The book acknowledges the legacy of a full range of artists whose lives and work in Los Angeles enabled the city to become the international contemporary art capital it is today.

In recent years the use of film and video by British artists has come to widespread public attention. Jeremy Deller, Douglas Gordon, Steve McQueen and Gillian Wearing all won the Turner Prize (in 2004, 1996, 1999 and 1997, respectively) for work made on video. This fin-de-sicle explosion of activity represents the culmination of a long history of work by less well-known artists and experimental filmmakers. Ever since the invention of film in the 1890s, artists have been attracted to the possibilities of working with moving images, whether in pursuit of visual poetry, the exploration of the art form’s technical challenges, the hope of political impact, or the desire to reinvigorate such time-honored subjects as portraiture and landscape.
